Sure, you could go to Best Buy or Radio Shack and pull the cheapest one off the shelf, but it’s probably not going to last, and likely won't sound too great either, assuming you are using quality speakers or headphones. Whether serving double duty as CD and DVD / Blu-Ray player in a home theater, or feeding a dedicated amp in an audiophile headphone rig, a CD player is the heart of most audio systems, and finding a good one can be tricky. I am certainly going to be buying an external DAC when I have the money! Unfortunately you aren't really going to get a decent new DAC in Australia unless you spend over $1000 so you might have to look elsewhere. As the most easily obtained physical source material for music, as well as the most popular format for high resolution playback, CDs are still indispensable for truly serious listeners, and a CD player of some sort is typically at the center of any home sound system. Apparently you can get a cheap DVD player to sound like a $2000+ CD player if you connect it to a decent DAC! I strongly recommend that you purchase an amplifier second hand, you can get some very nice kit for under $1000! Finally I suggest that you look at buying an external DAC and hooking it up to a DVD player or purchasing a cheap transport to pair with it. In conclusion I would recommend that you buy the Dynaudio Audience 42's as your speakers. With this setup both speakers performed amazingly! When I listened to the Dynaudio Audience 42's and the Monitor Audio Silver S1's they were hooked up to an Arcam CD73T CD player and an Arcam A85 in a hi fi store show room. I ended up selling both the Onkyo DV-S555 and the NAD C352 and I'm on the lookout for an amplifier (Or amplifiers) to connect my Arcam Diva CD 72 to when it arrives. I did however have the Dynaudio Audience 42's hooked up to an Onkyo DV-S555 DVD player and a NAD C352 amplifier and it sounded quite good considering the source. My setup isn't actually complete, I have an Arcam Diva CD 72 coming in the mail and I'm still looking at amplifiers to purchase. Īs you can see, I like the 'riskier' hi fi options, but you will definitely be getting much more for your money. Regarding speakers I would recommend that you look at the Monitor Audio S1's if you are looking for new speakers, otherwise have a look at this ebay auction for a pair of Dynaudio Audience 52 loudspeakers. ![]() I am purchasing from Cattylink sometime this week and I will be sure to inform everyone of my experiences when it is all delivered! It would probably be a good idea to wait for this to happen before you make any hi fi decisions or only focus on the speakers and cables. I guarantee you that you will not come even close to the quality of these products for the money. ![]() If you want to research products I would personally look at Xindak for possible amplifier purchases and Shengya (Also known as Vincent) for CD player purchases. These prices are in USD and if you are interested I suggest in finding out more about the retailer who quoted me these prices visit they seem like a legitimate company from the feedback and research that I have done. The best thing is, that if you purchase Xindak electronics direct from China you can get them for much, much less!Ī retailer on mainland China has already quoted me with prices for the Preamplifier and matching dual mono 120W power amplifier (Which retails for even more than the XA3200S.) ![]() The reviewer compares the Xindak pre-amplifier with an Electrocompaniet EC 4.7, which already retails for $4000 AUD! I know what you are thinking, but this manufacturer is the real deal, just read this review. A Chinese high end made preamplifier and power amp. If you are open minded I would recommend that you purchase what I'm purchasing. So far found that the combinations that produce most realistic voices tend to sound dull and unexciting with John Coltrane, and vice versa voices sound reedy.ĭoes anyone know who sells Quad in Melbourne?ĭoes anyone have experience with these brands and suggestions? Likewise, seen some scary threads here on NAD products. ![]() Noticed Encel has a deal with the Rotel 02s paired with Sonus Faber Concertino standmounters - but not so sure of rotel. Have trialled matching Cambridge and NAD cd players but found the detail with the arcam superior. Roughly $1k to spend on each item (can dig up a bit extra for cables and interconnects). So I've got about $3k and been trying these combos:Ĭambridge a64 amp/ NAD c342/ Arcam a65+/ Rega Brio amps + Arcam cd73t CD player + speakers: B&W 602 s3s, or Monitor Bronze B3s, or Mission M51s, or Mission m34is, (or Quad 11Ls - not yet tried). The old pioneer's on its last legs and I want to do something right for my CDs (listen to a lot of jazz, indi/ acoustic country, classical, rock). I'm in Melbourne, Vic, and been trialing amps, cd players and speakers for a couple of months.
